Born in Quebec, where he studied with the Jesuits, Louis Joliet took minor orders then went to Paris to study cosmography. Upon returning to canada (1668), he engaged in trade and exploring the area of the Great Lakes, of which he took possession in the name of the king of France. With jacques marquette, he explored the course of the Wisconsin, the Mississippi (Colbert), and the Illinois Rivers (1672). After having obtained the lordship of Anti-costi and being named hydrographer to the king (1688), he also explored the region of Labrador (1694), then taught hydrography at Quebec.
